How Do We Choose an Enterprise Architecture Tool in 2026?

EA · RESEARCH·23 OCT 2026·7 MIN READ·BY TARUN BULCHANDANI

Most enterprise architecture tools can now model capabilities, applications and roadmaps well, so modelling features rarely decide a purchase. The questions that separate them in 2026 are how the repository stays current without constant manual effort, how AI and applications are priced, whether your AI assistants and agents can query it, and where your data is hosted.

Enterprise architecture is the category closest to how we work at Arithim. This piece draws on Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Architecture Tools, published on 13 October 2026, which evaluated 15 vendors.

What changed in 2026

Gartner describes a market that shifted sharply over the past year. Vendors poured money into AI, several rebuilt their products, and acquisitions continued. Ardoq bought GraphLake and GBTEC bought Inverbis in June 2026, Bizzdesign launched its Unify platform in April, and ValueBlue renamed itself BlueDolphin.

Two of Gartner's observations matter most for buyers. The first is that more people now get architecture answers by asking a company-wide AI assistant than by opening the EA tool, which is pushing vendors from per-seat pricing toward consumption- and outcome-based pricing. Gartner warns that EA tools risk becoming back-end repositories as a result. The second is that some EA teams are building their own AI tools on coding platforms to replicate EA features, which Gartner flags as a source of unmanaged AI risk. We wrote about that pattern more broadly in how to secure vibe-coded apps.

Gartner also names constant manual maintenance as the core problem for EA teams, and says the ideal is a live view of the organisation's current state.

Gartner is explicit that a Leader is not automatically the right choice, and that a more focused vendor can fit a particular industry, budget or feature need better.

Five questions to ask before you buy

1. How will the repository stay current?

An EA tool is only trusted while its content is accurate. Most EA tools rely on integrations with the CMDB, project portfolio, finance and process tools, and Gartner points out that their value depends on data access and quality across those systems. ServiceNow and ins-pi avoid much of the integration work because they sit on the ServiceNow platform and read its CMDB directly, while the other vendors maintain connectors. Ask each vendor to show you how a new application, a retired one and a change of owner flow into the repository without someone typing them in.

2. How is AI priced, and will that price hold?

AI pricing varies more than anything else in this market. Ardoq and GBTEC include AI without metering. BOC Group, ins-pi, Sparx, QualiWare and Bee360 let you bring your own model API key. BlueDolphin uses a shared credit pool, SAP LeanIX uses SAP AI Units, ServiceNow uses Now Assist credits, Bizzdesign charges consumption fees through Unify, Orbus caps tokens and Avolution offers a monthly allowance. Gartner warns that vendors absorbing inference costs may come under margin pressure as agent workloads grow, so read the contract language on future AI features carefully.

3. Can your AI assistants and agents query it?

If people increasingly ask an enterprise AI assistant instead of opening the EA tool, the tool has to answer those questions through a standard interface. Gartner says buyers now see Model Context Protocol (MCP) access as essential. It notes that SAP LeanIX has shipped interactive MCP apps and Bee360 offers a vendor-managed MCP server, while Orbus trails most peers on customer-accessible MCP.

4. Does the pricing unit fit your scope?

Per-application pricing is easy to budget for application portfolio management, and Gartner cautions that it can discourage modelling the wider business. Per-user pricing can limit who gets access. Unlimited-user models (Bee360, Enterprise Architecture Solutions, and UNICOM's read-only users) suit organisations that want architecture content widely read.

5. Where will your data live?

For UK and EU buyers this often decides the shortlist. Many vendors in this market are European. BOC Group hosts its SaaS only in continental Europe, QualiWare offers content for NIS2, DORA and CSRD, and ins-pi is developing an AI model that keeps data inside your environment. Orbus has a FedRAMP-certified edition for US government. UNICOM offers no vendor-hosted option at all, and about 90% of QualiWare's customers still run on-premises.

Our view: the repository matters more than the diagrams

Gartner's warning that EA tools could become back-end repositories reads to us like a description of where the value is heading. When agents start making changes across a business, they need an accurate map of which applications exist, what each one does, who owns it and what depends on it. The EA repository is the obvious place for that map. A tool that keeps its repository accurate and exposes it cleanly to AI will matter more in three years than one with the best modelling canvas.

That makes data freshness and open access the selection criteria we would weight most heavily, ahead of notation support or visualisation.

Where agents help

Keeping the repository current is the job we think agents should take on first. An agent can compare the EA repository against the systems that actually change: the CMDB, cloud accounts, the single sign-on application list, software contracts and spend, and change tickets in ServiceNow or Jira. It can then propose updates, such as a new application found in SSO logs or an owner who has left, for an architect to approve in the EA tool itself. Over time it can flag drift between what the roadmap says and what is being built.

This works with whichever EA tool you already own, provided it has a usable API or MCP server. The architect still decides what goes into the repository; the agent takes over the data entry that most architects would happily give up.

Common questions

What is an enterprise architecture tool?

An EA tool is a central repository and modelling environment that records how an organisation's capabilities, processes, applications, information and technology relate to each other. Architects use it to analyse change, build roadmaps and test scenarios, and it connects to systems such as the CMDB, project portfolio and finance tools.

Which enterprise architecture tools are Leaders in Gartner's 2026 Magic Quadrant?

In the October 2026 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Architecture Tools, Gartner placed Ardoq, Bizzdesign, BOC Group, Orbus Software and SAP LeanIX in the Leaders quadrant. GBTEC and ServiceNow are Challengers; Avolution, BlueDolphin, Enterprise Architecture Solutions, ins-pi and QualiWare are Visionaries; and Bee360, Sparx Systems and UNICOM Systems are Niche Players. Gartner notes that a Leader is not always the right choice.

How are enterprise architecture tools priced?

Mostly per application or per user. Ardoq, SAP LeanIX and ServiceNow price by application in most packages; most others price by user. Bee360 ties price to the share of IT budget managed, with unlimited users, and Enterprise Architecture Solutions offers a flat subscription and a free open-source edition. AI is priced separately in many cases, through credits, consumption fees or your own model API key.

Is ServiceNow enough as an enterprise architecture tool?

It depends on what you need from EA. Gartner credits ServiceNow with a native, real-time repository built on its CMDB and with orchestration of AI agents across its products, but says its EA breadth trails the specialist vendors and its full value depends on other ServiceNow products. Organisations that are deep into ServiceNow and mainly need application portfolio management may find it enough.

Can AI keep our architecture repository up to date?

Partly, and that is the most valuable use of AI in EA. Gartner says the biggest opportunity is ending constant manual maintenance and getting a live view of the current state. Agents can compare the repository against the CMDB, cloud accounts, single sign-on app lists, contracts and change tickets, and propose updates for an architect to approve. Data quality in those source systems still limits how far this goes.
